6 juin 1944 à 00h22, le premier territoire Français est libéré, c'est un pont, le pont de Bénouville. 
Il relie les deux rives du Canal entre Bénouville et Ranville. C'est au milieu de ce pont, à gauche, 
que le premier combattant venu libérer la France est tombé, son nom : Den Brotheridge
